Your 'Additional Insured' Status: What it Really Means
Owners commonly require that contractors and subcontractors provide them "additional insured" status by requiring an additional insured endorsement from the general liability policy. The additional insured status is intended to provide extra coverage to the owner or general contractor in the event of an insurance claim. This status is provided by an endorsement or written amendment to the underlying policy. Just like a primary insurance policy, additional insured coverage provides both a defense and indemnity to the additional insured. However there are some limitations, and the terms of an additional insured endorsement must be reviewed in order to determine exactly what coverage is provided.
As a general contractor/owner, being an additional insured is an important and highly effective tool to ensure that you do not have to pay the legal fees and damages that typically arise from a job site accident. As a subcontractor, you are extending coverage from your policy to the additional insured.
PRODUCT HIGHLIGHT: What is Business Income Insurance?
If your business suffers a property loss, it could cause the business to slow or close down while repairs are made. This may mean a complete or partial revenue loss depending on the time frame and the damage.
From the time the loss occurs until your business is running again, Business Income insurance (also known as Business Interruption) can
replace your lost profits, and provide a source of money to pay your necessary continuing expenses, like rent, payroll, taxes, etc. You can also buy insurance to cover any extra expenses incurred in getting your business back into operation. It may take a while once you re-open for customers to discover you are back in business, which may hurt your bottom line. To meet this need, insurance companies offer coverage for the difference between your "before loss" business income and your "after loss" business income for a month or more while you regain your customers.
